Skateboarding will be in the 2020 summer Olympics located in Tokyo, Japan, along with Climbing, Surfing, Karate, and Baseball. It seems to me that just about every single type of sport is now an Olympic one.
Initially, I was apprehensive about the prospect of skateboarding being in the Olympics. But thinking deeper into it, it isn’t as if there hasn’t been skateboarding contest before. We’ve had the X games, Maloof Money Cup, and much more recently, Street League. Skateboarding in the Olympics is the same exact thing, just on a much larger scale, so what difference does it really make? More people will know about skateboarding, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
I used to be one of those guys praying that skateboarding will die again, and go back to being something so small that people don’t even give it a passing thought. But being stingy about what you enjoy isn’t what this is about, it’s about having fun and spreading the goodness of Skateboarding. It being in the Olympics isn’t going to change anything, all it’s going to mean is that Skateboarding is now in the Olympics. So I had to let it go, I had to realize that Skateboarding dying and experiencing a rebirth is very unlikely. Things change, sometimes for the better, and other times, for the worst. All this means for me is that I now have another reason to watch the Olympics, aside from Table Tennis.
Whether or not this is good for Skateboarding is up for a long, heated debate.
